What I Support

Affordable Housing

  • Preserve our current affordable housing and invest in more

  • Help communities keep rents low

  • Give Maine residents a leg-up in this housing market

Pass the Local Option Lodging Tax for Affordable Housing

Our people make our city an amazing place to live. They also make it an attractive place to visit. While tourism helps our economy, it also reduces the number of homes available for residents and drives up the cost of housing. I’ll fight to give Portland the option of collecting a 1% tax on short-term lodging and direct all the revenue back to building and maintaining affordable housing for Portland residents.

Climate Emergency

  • Invest in renewable energy and public transportation for net-neutral emissions

  • Make home electrification more accessible

  • Conserve carbon-rich land

Invest in Renewable Energy and Public Transportation for Net-Neutral Emissions by 2030

The IPCC report that came out in October 2018 was a wake-up call for all of us, and it’s past time to take bold action for our future. I’ll work with the entire state to achieve net-neutral carbon emissions by 2030 through a dramatic investment in local renewable energy production, in public transportation, and in forest carbon conservation.

Equality and Justice

  • End youth incarceration in Maine

  • Support trans rights and healthcare access

  • Restore Tribal Sovereignty

  • Defend lgbt+ equality

  • Protect access to abortion

End Youth Incarceration, Support Trans Rights, and Restore Indigenous Sovereignty

Every time we recite the Pledge of Allegiance, we dedicate ourselves to the pursuit of justice for all. Yet our history is filled with unjust laws and unequal treatment, beginning with the conquest of indigenous peoples and their land. I’ll work with partners across the state to support those who are pursuing justice and helping repair the damage that has been done. I’ll fight to restore tribal sovereignty in Maine by passing the recent recommendations of the Indian Claims Task Force. I’ll work with formerly-incarcerated youth to close Long Creek and create avenues for true youth development and restoration. And I’ll fight to make sure every trans person in our state has access to the healthcare and support they need to thrive.

Defending Democracy

  • Expand vote by mail

  • Fully implement Ranked-Choice Voting

  • Make Election Day a holiday

Stop Republicans from Weakening Our Right to Vote

Democracy means that every person’s voice is heard and every person’s vote matters. In states across the country, Republican legislators are making it harder to vote and are especially targeting voters of color. I’ll fight to make sure that doesn’t happen here in Maine. In fact, I’ll work with legislators across the state to strengthen our democracy with measures like an Election Day holiday, weekend voting, and protecting ballot drop-boxes. I’ll also fight to re-introduce and pass the National Popular Vote Compact, moving us one step closer towards electing our presidents by the Popular Vote.

Invest in People

  • Guarantee every generation has access to a great public education, high speed internet, food, healthcare, and housing

Support Public Investments in Education, Healthcare, and Housing…for All of Us

I wouldn’t be here today without a great public school education, a dry roof over my head, and regular care from a doctor. We owe these opportunity of education, housing, and healthcare to each member of our next generation. I’ll support efforts to build affordable housing and expand access to healthcare, and I’ll fight to make sure the schools with the most need are getting the most state support.

New Mainers

  • Help New Mainers contribute to our shared future by removing barriers to work permits

Let New Mainers Contribute to Our Shared Future

Immigrants have always made our state and country great. When they arrive, many New Mainers bring highly-trained skills and years of professional experience with them. However, they are held back from fully contributing their talents to our state by the need for English proficiency and the lack of work transition programs. I’ll fight to create intensive language-learning opportunities and I’ll work with professional industries to let New Mainers transfer their skills into relevant high-demand jobs.

For years, our families, faith communities, nonprofits, and city staff have taken part in the heroic group effort of welcoming immigrants and asylum-seekers to our city. While it’s clear that the initial resettlement process needs additional state support, it’s also clear that long-term success means letting our new neighbors contribute fully to our shared future.
